Together in Molenwijk

At the request of the OBA (Public Library) in Molenwijk, we developed a training to connect young people and adults in that Amsterdam neighbourhood through stories. Many adults (45+) experienced the presence of certain groups of young people as a nuisance. Among other things, this reduced the sense of social safety.

Conflict management and nuisances

We brought the two groups together to listen to each other’s stories. These were not directly about nuisance, but about feeling safe / unsafe. In other words: about “feeling at home” in the Molenwijk. The process ended with a presentation where they shared stories among themselves, where they told more about the workshop and they indicated how they want to use storytelling in future situations of conflict management, meeting up and increasing the sense of security.

  • Bringing 11 young people (14-17 years) and 9 adults (45+) together (20 people in total), let them listen to each other and develop an understanding for each other
  • Increasing the sense of social safety in the Molenwijk in Amsterdam-Noord
  • Strengthing self-confidence and self-respect by learning to express oneself and being heard
  • Contributing to self-reflection by focusing on listening in addition to telling
