Statement Storytelling Festival 2023

“Storytelling Centre believes in the power of telling stories. Next to that we are convinced that a balanced and culturally diverse society has to give space to everyone’s story. In an ever changing society we see it as a need to give a stage to all these stories, in the theater and outside of it, and to bind people through their stories. That’s our driving force.”

When this mission statement was formulated a few years ago we didn’t expect to live in such dark and polarising times today. For the past five years The Amsterdam Storytelling Festival was proudly led by an Israeli and an Iranian, which allowed the festival to talk about painful subjects, sometimes in serious tones, sometimes with laughter, but also to ignore them and bring stories that went beyond our national identities. To meet as humans, which is what we believe should always be the relationship between the artist and the audience.

This year wounds are open and bleeding. But still we believe in the beauty and importance of this festival. We are so happy to give a stage to All the artists we have invited, because of who they are. We will listen to all of their stories, and hear what they have to say. It will not solve the ills of the world, but we know that without listening the ability to see humanity in each other is a fleeting fantasy.
